Title: Day After

Series: the 19th Year Trilogy

Author: Emi Gayle

Publisher: J. Taylor Publishing

Release Date: May 6th 2013

Source: ARC received from publisher

From Goodreads:

Demon crypts. Vampire lairs. Glowing angels. Sexy sirens. The stuff of fiction.

Or so Winn Thomas always thought.

Since being accepted into the fold of the supernatural, he knows better. None of what he imagined is true, but everything he feared is, and binding himself to his Changeling girlfriend until her nineteenth birthday will give him an education far beyond what he’d get at his human high school.

Luckily, Winn’s not giving up, he won’t back down, and he definitely isn’t going to run away with his tail between his legs. After all, only werewolves have tails. Right?

In this, the second of the 19th Year trilogy, Winn’s facing the challenge of one lifetime. If he doesn’t learn the truth about mythological creatures, his girlfriend Mac Thorne won’t either. That means, in six months, when she chooses her final form, she won’t know what to pick.

Winn, though, has his own ideas about Mac’s final selection—plans she knows nothing of.

He intends to have her pick human.

Whether she can or not.

My Review

Day After is full of mystery and intrigue and excitement, and I pretty much enjoyed this book from start to finish. As always with Emi’s writing, the plot is as intricately revealed as it woven, leaving the reader constantly guessing and anticipating, and very often surprised. The slow reveal of revelation after revelation as each and every discovery is made is a strong motivator for the reader to keep turning the pages. But an even bigger motivator than that is the MC. Winn. *sigh*
Winnford Thomas, how I adore thou, geeky dude that thee are.
Winn won me over (ha! no pun intended) in After Dark, so I was very much looking forward to reading into his somewhat convoluted (he’s a guy, after all) mind and finding out just how the other half of Mac and Winn views their somewhat unusual relationship. Sure, to begin, his voice took a little getting into–I blame that on the great connection I felt from Mac in the first book–but it wasn’t long before I’d slid into the nerdy mind of Winn, and was very soon happy to be taken along on his ride (you can stop those filthy thoughts of yours; I didn’t mean it like that). As I expected him to be, he was intelligent and patient and caring and passionate and … just Winn. In case you hadn’t figured it out, I kinda like Winn. ;)
Plus we have Mac–through Winn’s eyes. She was slightly more frustrating a character in Day After than she was in After Dark, but I imagine that’s because we got a much stronger smack upside the head of just how her actions and decisions affected Winn on a personal and emotional level–and thanks to that connection I mentioned, they can be tough to endure through his eyes. But I still love Mac, because deep down I suspected she had her own solid reasoning for doing what she did–after all, she does really consider her actions even if she doesn’t realise she’s doing it at the time.
I’m not going to delve too much into the plot, because it’s quite complex, so the best thing to do is to just read it for yourself. But just know, you will get some answers you’ve been hoping for, at the same time as landing with a few new ones; you will experience a couple WTF!? moments when some ‘stuff’ comes to light or characters behave in a certain way; you will definitely want to do a little bit of neck throttling; and you will adore Winn. So just read it anyway. ;o)
That is all.

So, did I convince you yet? Maybe this excerpt will help:

~~~~~
Sitting in front of the twelve most powerful non-humans on the earth would have shaken a lesser guy. In my case, I’d almost thrown up. Twice.
‘Don’t worry,’ Mackenzie Thorne, my girlfriend, had said. ’‘It’s just a formality.
She hadn’t known I’d have to go alone.
Only the intake and exhalation of air in the room made any sound. Eerie light flickered from the tips of candles mounted along dark, oak-paneled walls.
I refused to look anywhere but ahead of me. To the long, wooden, medieval-length table.
Waiting.
Watching.
Holding my own breath.
For a moment, it seemed the walls began to close in on me.
At almost midnight on the first day of the year, I prepared to accept a fate no other human had ever taken on, been given or even offered. In response, sweat pooled under my armpits as alternating cold and hot ran through me.
The scratch of wood against wood had heads turning. Mine included.
Nahir, the oldest of the twelve, rose from his chair. “Winford Richmond Thomas, please rise.” His voice had a gravelly, hoarse sound.
I did as requested, my knees pressing against each other.
Nahir moved closer to me, his grandfatherly, human form disappearing under protruding scales of deep green. His arms lengthened into dinosaur-like paws and hit the rock floor, making the room around us shake. Thick wings extended from his body, and a tail lashed out against the wall behind him, rattling the candles.
A dragon, in the color of tropical ocean water, stood before me, huffing air from horse-sized nostrils.
Oh. God. I’m going to die.
Not going to die. It’s part of the test. Remember, you have to see them all. Mac’s words flowed through my mind.
Keep breathing.
“Master Thomas.” Josie, a siren and one of the most beautiful women I’d ever met, rose, her long flowing gown matching the color of her reddish-gold hair. I couldn’t help but stare at her. “You’ve been asked by our current changeling, Miss Maya Mackenzie Thorne, to be her teacher. Have you willingly agreed to take on this duty?” As Josie talked, she stalked forward, shimmering, shifting, the already-pretty woman becoming deadly man-hunting female—according to the legends I’d read.
Vibes ebbed from her like the rocking tide. If she sang, throwing up would be the least of my worries. I’d be dead by sexual self-implosion.
With a rough cough, I gathered my wits. “Yes. I have accepted. Willingly.” Every nerve ending in my body urged me to go to Josie, to let her take me and do with me whatever she wanted. A groan built in my throat, tension straining my limbs, most particularly, my crotch. Not now! The need to shift what grew sent heat to my cheeks even as Mac’s words played through again. Force yourself not to react to any of them. They’ll think you’re stronger than you are since you’re only human.
Only human. Problem number one.
Emi Gayle just wants to be young again. She lives vicariously through her youthful characters, while simultaneously acting as chief-Mom to her teenaged son and searching for a way to keep her two daughters from ever reaching the dreaded teen years.
Ironically, those years were some of Emi’s favorite times. She met the man of her dreams at 14, was engaged to him at 19, married him at 20 and she’s still in love with him to this day. She’ll never forget what it was like to fall in love at such a young age — emotions she wants everyone to feel.
Werewolvesbanner
Welcome, lovely peeps, to my stop for the Werewolves Be Damned Blog Tour.
I’m very excited to be a part of this tour, just as I was very excited to receive a copy of this yummy-looking book for review.
Let’s take a quick look at what enticed me so, shall we?
Title: Werewolves Be Damned
Series: Magic & Mayhem #1
Author: Stacey Kennedy
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Publication Date: April 15th 2013
Source: Review received from publisher (thanks)
Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.
Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.
But when a vampire paints a bull’s-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.
My Review
Werewolves Be Damned took me by surprise a little bit. Sure, I liked the sound of the blurb, and yup, the cover is pleasing to the eye—but I didn’t expect to enjoy it quite as much as I did. Because, whilst the beginning was a little rocky for the first couple of percent, it didn’t take long for me to connect with the characters, and to have a handle on the world Ms Kennedy had begun to build, and I very soon found myself rolling happily along for the ride.
Before I explain what I liked about it so much, let’s quickly get the yukkies out of the way. The biggest issue I had with the book had absolutely nothing to do with the story but with the writing. It’s not bad. I’m just a finicky blighter, and there were quite a few parts I felt were overwritten. And there were quite a few details that were repeated more than once, as though the author felt the need to drum it into our skulls. The bits that were overwritten? They were mostly in what I like to call the pondering paragraphs, where the MC is figuring stuff out, or trying to explain stuff to drip-feed the reader. These sections could’ve been tighter and the pace would’ve been faster—which would have made the writing more consistent throughout.
Because, in other sections, there were moments of pure brilliance in this writing. Like the fight scenes, for instance. All too often, I spend fight scenes frowning, trying to figure it out and follow, and I reach certain spots and realise I actually had NO handle on where all the involved characters were.
SO not the case with Werewolves Be Damned. Every single fight scene was nothing short of awesome. On top of those, we have the intimate—the ‘heated’—scenes.
Again, far too often in adult PNR, these end up being contrite and cheesy and my eyes start rolling around like they’re lost, at all the ridiculous dialogue asking if the other person ‘likes that?’ like the groans and writhing isn’t indication enough … wow, steering off track here.
Anyway, again, SO not a concern in Werewolves Be Damned. These scenes were placed in exactly the right spots. None of them seemed ‘convenient’ or unnatural, and those combined with the fight scenes, combined with the character development and the world building, make this into one rocking read.
And those characters I mentioned? Yeah, we get to see both Nexi’s and Kyden’s (ROAWRRR!!!!) POV, and I enjoyed that a lot. Both of them have credibility. Both of them are likeable and bondable from a reader perspective. Kyden is HOT AS HECK! It was a pleasure spending time with this duo, and I’m really looking forward to meeting with them again (because Kyden is HOT AS HECK!).
I’m also looking forward to seeing more of all the side characters. Do you think Ms Kennedy will consider giving me some airtime with a couple of those wolves if I bat my lashes enough? Worth a try, right? :P
On top of those, we also have the plot, which was great from the off. Everything was so smoothly looped together and so clearly expressed that I had no trouble following along and chasing the ‘mystery’ with them.
Not even the world building was an issue for me—and absorbing created worlds are the biggest hurdles for me in books. Rather, the world this author has given us felt fresh (to me) and solid and displayed with a clarity that tells me the author not only understands her world but knows what she’s doing when it comes to delivering it to the reader. This, aside from the kick-a$$ fight scenes, is the strongest attribute of the book, imo.
So, have I convinced you to give it a try yet?
Well, if you’re a fan of PNR with butt-booting heroines, hotness, and testosterone, you certainly should.
Because Werewolves Be Damned promises to be the start of a great series, which I believe will become a great addition to the genre.
And if that’s not enough to grab your interest, then how about an excerpt of this wolfy tale?
Below:
~~~~~

Teaser:

I’ve found you, fur ball.

Nexi peered from behind the large oak tree and spotted the small log cabin nestled in the thick forest. The porch light cast a warm glow into the night. Fog settled over the lush grass, and the night was dark, eerie.

Stepping away from her hiding place behind the tree, she strode forward and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand. Keeping the silver blade pointed outward, she climbed the cabin’s porch steps, taking each one slowly to avoid detection.

Once she arrived at the front door, she wrapped her hand around the door handle. Rich hunger for revenge burned in her veins and made her intent on one thing: to slaughter the werewolf who escaped the night of her parents’ murder. Not caring what awaited her, she stormed inside, dagger pointed, ready to kill.

The simple cabin had two large brown couches near a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette behind the living room, and a quilt-covered bed resting in the back. And that was it; there were no other rooms to investigate. No secret hiding places she could see.

No damned werewolf.

She cursed, shut the front door behind her, then trotted down the steps to return to her hiding spot. On her way across the yard, she glanced at the space to the right of the tree, which looked much like a heat wave, indicating that the portal to the Otherworld remained.

In some places around the world—or the Earthworld, as supernaturals had called it—there were permanent portals to the supernatural realm. This portal had only appeared because Nexi had travelled to this cabin from the Otherworld. Once she passed through the portal again, the gateway would vanish.

Magic had its perks. Quick travel was one of them.

Nexi shook her head at how normal all this magical stuff seemed now. Just over a month ago she’d never believed in anything that went bump in the night. Now she knew all those things existed, and in fact, she was one of them.

To her horror, she had learned that her birth mother, Tillie, had been murdered by a power-hungry vampire, Lazarus.  All those years ago, her birth father, Drake, had protectively decided to block Nexi’s supernatural abilities. He had planned for her to live and die as a mortal. Now with her return to the Otherworld and the removal of the block on her true identity, there was no going back.

She was no longer plain, human, Nexi Jones.

She was Nexi Jones, part guardian, part witch.

Looking away from the portal and to her hiding spot until the werewolf returned, she hurried her steps. She wasn’t ready to return to the Otherworld yet. Not until she had the werewolf’s head as her wall ornament would she dare go home.

Just as she neared the tree, a woodsy scent that had nothing to do with the forest mixed with the citrusy aroma of aftershave. A blink of an eye later, the dagger she held was now at her throat, a hard body closed in on her back.

“You smelled lovely when you arrived.” The low voice by her ear held a faint English accent. “But I never imagined you’d be so pretty.”

The blade pressed into her skin, not drawing blood, but implying that if the werewolf chose, she’d be destined for the grave. “I’m…”

“Going to explain yourself.” He lowered the dagger, took hold of her arm, and jerked her forward.

In a few short strides, the werewolf tossed her through the threshold of the cabin, and slammed the door behind them. He sauntered to the couch, sat down, and regarded her. “Now then, darlin’.” His olive skin was stunningly flawless, and his chocolate-colored hair was spiked tall. “Why would a pretty lass like yourself plan to attack me?”

“Don’t move.” That charm wouldn’t fool her. “Stay right where you are.”

“My mouth is the only thing moving.” His slanted amber eyes raked over her. “Would you like me to stop talking?”

“No.” She hesitated then added, “Only your mouth can move. Nothing else. Tell me what you know.”

He gave her a long look. “I’d be glad to tell you anything you’d like, love.”

His kind face and soft voice wouldn’t trick her. He was a werewolf. She was certain, which was another oddity.

After the block on her supernatural abilities had been lifted, she could identify a supernatural creature as if knowing the difference between a brunette and a redhead. “Tell me why you killed my family.”

“That’s an interesting accusation.” He cocked his head, studying her with a frown. “But I think the more important question is who are you?”

She lifted her chin. “The lass who’s going to cut off your furry wolf balls.”

animate_me_tour_banner

Hey, all, and welcome to my stop on the Animate Me blog tour, where I get to share an excerpt of Ruth Clampett’s latest book.

First up, though, let’s take a look at the book in question.

~~~~~
She seemed far beyond his reach…could love draw them together?
For years shy animator Nathan has carried a torch for Brooke, the beautiful and dynamic Director of Development at their animation studio, even creating B-Girl, a comic-book heroine in her likeness. When a new project throws the two of them together, lovestruck Nathan finally seizes his moment – only to find Arnauld, head of the animation studio, claiming exclusive rights to Brooke’s affections.
But Nathan, it turns out, is not giving up on his dreams so easily. With inspired determination, he sets out to be the super hero of wooing his girl. Threatened by his persistence, Arnauld plays dirty – only to spark an uprising at the studio that unleashes the sort of havoc only a building full of frustrated animators can create. While Nathan pulls out all the stops to win his B-girl, Brooke has to choose. Should she pursue the sparkling career that has taken her years to build…or follow her heart?
~~~~~

Sounds like there could be trouble afoot in this one, eh?

If this one floats your boat, you can add it to your Goodreads by clicking HERE!

And now, let’s take a look at that excerpt:

~~~~~
The sun’s low in the sky as I stride up to my Wonder Woman waiting in her home’s open doorway. It takes my complete focus to maintain my Indiana Jones bravado when all I want to do is stop and bask in her super hero glory. From her majestic gold headpiece, all the way down to her sexy boots, she is everything I’d hoped for and more. With great concentration I manage to carry off my swagger as I move close to her.
“Hey, Wonder Woman,” I say in a low voice, tipping my hat. “You’re looking mighty fine.”
Wow, the way she’s lookings at me…it’s kind of wild…
“Indiana,” she says in a low seductive voice. “I always knew some day you’d come walking back through my door.” She reaches out and runs her fingers along the edge of my shirt. “You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.”
Hot damn.
There’s so much pent up desire fueled by our private fantasies that between the flush moving across her chest, and the way she’s gazing at me, I can tell she’s excited already. I sweep her into my arms and kiss her with everything I’ve got. My hat falls off my head and tumbles to the ground. Moments later, we’re grinding together against her door jamb, not even caring who might pass by and see us. At this point I just want to make love to her until she sees stars.
When I grope her breast over her costume, and bite her neck, she gasps, “Let’s go inside.” I kick the door wide open and carry her towards her living room. I feel this unbelievable surge of adrenaline…I am Indiana Jones, sweaty and rugged, ready to take my woman!
UltraAgent Surefire’s plan is simple: Capture the transhuman thief Raven. Win back the respect of her father. Get a raise.
Easy, right?
Except Surefire just broke the number one rule of her employer, UltraSecurity, a niche security firm that solves crimes committed by genetically enhanced humans like Raven. She trailed Raven into a warehouse without backup. And something more powerful than any transhuman is waiting inside.
Raven’s plan is simple: Atone for his past crimes. Return stolen spiritual artifacts to restore the world’s balance. Don’t get caught by UltraSecurity.
Easy, right?
Until a spunky UltraSecurity agent is suddenly on his tail, although Raven wishes she was on … well, never mind … he can’t get distracted from his mission. Because she’s followed him into a warehouse filled with his reclaimed relics, and Raven’s ex-partner in crime is about to unleash a supernatural-sized complication into his plan.
His old partner has accidentally summoned an Aztec god who will destroy the world unless Raven stops this spirit with a superiority complex. To do this, Raven must team up with Surefire and reveal the truth about his powers, exposing her to a force that can either save the world or destroy them both.
Following Raven into that warehouse throws Surefire into a surreal world filled with moody gods, day-glo skulls, dizzying dimensional portals, maniacal half-roach magicians, and a sexy thief who is more than he appears under his snug t-shirt. Is Raven a criminal, or is he working for a higher power? Surefire needs to be certain, because if she joins him on this mission, she’ll have to surrender everything she believed in for a surefire way to save the world, discover her destiny and find true love.
Launch Day: daynight by Megan Thomason #Giveaway
On Tour with Prism Book Tours
It’s time to leave Earth and cross over to the other side… it’s not as far away as you think!!
Megan Thomason
Megan Thomason lives in paradise aka San Diego, CA with her husband and five children. A former software manager, Megan vastly prefers writing twisted tales to business, product, and marketing plans. When she isn’t typing away on her laptop, she’s reading books on her phone—over 600 in the last year—or attending to the needs of her family. Megan’s fluent in sarcasm, could potentially benefit from a 12-step program for road rage, struggles with a Hot Tamales addiction, loves world travel & fast cars and hates paperwork & being an insomniac. Daynight is Megan’s first published novel, but fourth written one.
Welcome to the “Second Chances” daynight blog tour! Over the next few day/nights I am really excited to share with you:
- Over $300 of daynight-related prizes as a giant THANK YOU to the thousands ofdaynight early adopters and those who have yet to enter the twisted world of The Second Chance Institute and Thera. Want to prepare for Exile? Or an overday date with Ethan? Have breakfast for dinner? Glam it up in Garden City? There are *12* prize packages to be won! We’ll introduce a new package every day of the tour so you’ll have a second, third & so forth chance to win.
- The launch of clean slate complex (a daynight story)… For those who have read daynight you can learn more about what the SCI is up to on Earth (surely nothing good). For those who haven’t read daynight this is a great way to get your feet wet…test the waters so to speak. I warn you though…the SCI’s like Jaws Jr and the giant school of barracuda I encountered on my recent vacation–pretty from a distance, but up close they’ve got a lot of bite ;) .
- Posters, teasers and guest posts about the themes of daynight and clean slate complex... Plus, I’m fully prepared to sneak in some nuggets about what to expect in the daynight sequel, arbitrate.
by Megan Thomason
Paperback, 324 pages
Published November 26th 2012 by Creatspace
Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex. Punishment for disobeying SCI edicts? Immediate Exile or death.
Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.
Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.
Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.
clean slate complex
by Megan Thomason
Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Worldwide non-profit and do-gooder organization. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life(TM). Reality: hidden behind every kind act is a dark agenda designed to gain control and force societal and moral extremes. Currently, the SCI’s pushing Project Liberate, a program to woo the poor and downtrodden into their Clean Slate Complexes—where “everything is provided” from jobs to food, shelter, clothing, and education. Unfortunately, as with all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch…
Meet Alexa Knight. Feisty, tough and currently homeless in Los Angeles, Alexa agrees to help the SCI in return for medical care for her sick mother. When she starts to suspect there’s more to the SCI than meets the eye will she believe Adam—the boy who saved her life and the SCI’s biggest champion, or Joshua—the attractive enigma who sings about conspiracy theories and pretends to be someone he’s not?
Full of action, humor, romance, twists and turns, clean slate complex is a companion story to the highly-praised dystopian novel, daynight. It can be enjoyed before or after readingdaynight.
Blog Tour: Mark of the Sylph by Rosalie Lario – Excerpt plus #Giveaway
Mark-of-the-Sylph-Button-300x128
Yahoo! Welcome to my tour stop for Mark of the Sylph. I’m mega excited to be taking part. And I have a real treat for you here. Because not only is there a GREAT giveaway being run, but I also have an excerpt to share.
But first up, let’s take a look at the book in question.
Half-demon Taeg is desperate to free his pregnant sister-in-law, who is spellbound to an indestructible book that will create an army of the undead. He is convinced that an ancient sword can destroy the book and the spell forever, but this relic has been hidden for a millennia by a powerful glamour. The clock begins to run out on his search when an old rival goes after the book and Taeg’s family in his quest for revenge.
Librarian Maya Flores has a secret: she’s immune to magic and is well aware of the supernatural beings prowling the streets of New York City. Haunted by a brutal demon attack that took her family, she is on a one-woman mission to destroy the evil demons who did it—and any others who get in her way.
Maya is Taeg’s best hope for uncovering the sword.
Unfortunately, she wants nothing more than to kill him. As he fights for her trust and to save his family, she is forced to face the truth that not all demons are evil. And the worst part? She might be falling in love with one, too.
Is it just me–or is this cover super steaming goodness?
Granted, I don’t often get all googly-eyed over the naked torso kinda shots, but there’s just something about this dude’s shiny hard body that has me staring a little longer than necessary.
So, is inside the covers as yummy as outside? Let’s take a look. Here’s your excerpt:
~~~~~

Maya leaned back onto her haunches and examined the demon. Unconscious, he didn’t appear evil. In fact, with his sharp, symmetrical features and golden glow, he was different from any other demon she’d ever seen. A demon who joked around. Who had family he seemed to care for. Who sounded believable when he assured her he wouldn’t hurt her.

How wholly unexpected.

“What’s your game?” With her fingertips, she tentatively touched his lips. Soft and full.

What an elaborate ruse to make her believe he wasn’t an evil fiend. She wasn’t buying it, though.

Then why are you still here, Maya?

Good question. She allowed her fingers to trail down to his chest, which felt like molten steel beneath her fingertips. She knew from experience that demons ran hot, but she’d never wondered about it before. They came from Hell, after all.

He groaned and shifted, the big lump on his head already beginning to recede. She yanked her hand back. When he settled down without regaining consciousness, she returned her fingers to his stomach. Not an ounce of flab on him, as far as she could tell.

The memory of his hard length pressed against her penetrated her mind, and a rush of warmth coursed through her. He’d seemed surprised when she called him an incubus, but what else could he be?

Without warning, a hand seized her wrist. Before she could react, he flipped her onto her back and buried his face in her hair. His weight pressed down on her. Oh, fuck!

“You sure like to play rough, don’t you?” he said in a sleepy voice.

For one long moment she lay there, too caught off-guard to answer. She pushed against his chest. “Get off, demon.”

Taeg lifted his head and curved his lips into a wicked smile. “Is that an invitation, sweetheart? Cause I’d sure as hell love to.”

Apparently. The proof of that dug hard and hot against her. Much to Maya’s embarrassment, another flare of heat unfurled low in her belly, warming her from the loins up.

“Get off me, you idiot.”

As if he read her shame, he frowned and raised himself off her. “Sorry, I thought…you had your hands on me.”

Maya scrambled to her feet and ran across the room, grabbing the sliver of glass she’d dropped earlier. She fought back a fierce flush as she turned to face him again. “I was…I was checking you for weapons.”

“Weapons?” He pushed off the floor with the hand that wasn’t tied to the foot post and sat up awkwardly. Doubt written across his face, he muttered, “Well, you found one.”

Formally trained as a corporate and real estate lawyer, I practiced law for 5 years before finally admitting to myself that negotiating contracts wasn’t nearly as fun as dreaming up stories. As an avid reader of romances and supernatural stories, I knew I wanted to write urban fantasy and paranormal romance.  Tales of vampires, demons, and other supernatural beings ensued.

I’m currently working on the Demons of Infernumseries, a series of paranormal romance novels featuring four sexy half-demon brothers and their reluctant heroines.

When not writing, I enjoy spending time with my husband and son in our home state of Florida, as well as searching out things that go bump in the night. I still haven’t found any, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

If I ever do find evidence of the supernatural, it remains to be seen whether I’ll jump around in excitement, or run screaming in terror (but I’m betting on the latter)!

Blog Tour: Read an excerpt of Night Demon by Lisa Kessler

Welcome to my stop for Lisa Kessler’s Night Demon Blog Tour!

Do I have a treat for you with a real cute and *almost* steamy excerpt from Ms Kessler’s latest title–one that had me smiling from the very first line.

But, first, let’s take a look at the book in question.

Deep within the Yucatan jungle a demon has awakened…

Gretchen Finch’s job would be much easier if she weren’t alone in the jungle with a brilliant recluse whose every glance sets her on fire. But the more she focuses on her work, the closer she gets to unlocking the mysteries of a terrible creature – the Night Demon – that threatens the world as she knows it. Though her scientific mind tells her it’s impossible, she’s beginning to believe the ancient Mayan tales as the sinister jungle comes alive around her.

Lukas Smith has spent hundreds of years searching for answers to his immortal Night Walker nature. As a series of ancient glyphs become clear, he’s about to find out more than he’d ever hoped, but the more he learns, the more his fate intertwines with the Night Demon, and the harder it becomes to hide his immortal secret from the beautiful, intelligent Gretchen.

Together, they must find a way to stop the inexplicable violence and mass destruction surging across the earth before the Night Demon destroys more than just mankind.

Dunno about you, but I think this sounds seriously cool. :D

Don’t forget to add it to your Goodreads before you leave, by clicking on the coverart image.

And now for what you’ve been waiting for. The awesome excerpt.

~~~~~
“Tell me something.” His voice was soft and low, like the tide. “Why haven’t you ever been married?”
“I had bigger plans than a wedding.” Gretchen shrugged, unsure where the conversation was headed but encouraged that Lukas finally asked about something unrelated to work. “I had a couple boyfriends in college, and I dated one of my professors after my doctorate, but relationships don’t travel well, and I like to travel.” She hesitated for a second, glancing his way. “My mom left us when I was little, and a few years ago I lost my dad suddenly. He used to love to take me places camping…” She let out a small sigh. “I feel closer to him when I’m out exploring, I guess.”
Lukas smiled at her, and her stupid heart fluttered in her chest. “Your father raised an amazing woman.”
The brief moment of light was quickly extinguished, though, and his features smoothed back into the chiseled mask of a tormented man.
“What about you?” Gretchen asked. “You’re a good-looking, intelligent guy. Have you ever been married?”
“No.” He clenched his fists, and his forearm muscles contracted. Gretchen did her best not to think about his strong hands as he went on. “I would never wish my life on anyone I loved.”
“You need to look in a mirror, Lukas. Your life is not so bad.” Gretchen straightened up, her brow furrowed. “Maybe you’d notice that if you didn’t waste all your energy pushing everyone away.”
He shook his head, still staring out at the water. “This isn’t what I want.” He stood up and took her hand, sending a jolt of electricity through her body. His gaze demanded hers, and her breath caught in her throat seeing the hunger in his dark green eyes. “There are sins in my past that can never be forgiven, Gretchen. My only solace is to find answers. Anything beyond that…love, passion…it’s all an illusion for me.”
He leaned toward her, and Gretchen’s chin tilted up instinctively, aching to taste him, to heal his wounded spirit. The moment his cool lips brushed hers, her pulse jumped. His kiss, like rich chocolate, infused her senses, making her hungry for more.
A moan escaped her throat as his tongue swept along the crease of her lips, enticing her to open her mouth and surrender to the passion she’d been trying to bury. His fingers slid into her hair and awareness bloomed through her body, forming a pool of heat in her belly. Gretchen let her hands explore his chest, living the fantasy she’d harbored for months, when he suddenly took a step back, breaking the contact.
T’fu! Dammit.” Lukas shook his head, cursing under his breath. A rich undercurrent of a Russian accent flavored his words. It reminded her again that “Smith” was probably not his real last name.
He released her hand. “Forgive me. I usually have more self control.”
Gretchen wished he had a lot less. Her legs felt rubbery, her senses on overload, and he apologized for it? She thought he’d finally given up keeping a “professional” distance, but no, Lukas was like an onion with never-ending layers. Would he ever let her in?
~~~~~
See, I told you it was awesome. :D

The Love Lines series by Diana Nixon

The traces of supernatural powers have always been crossing the world of human beings. Many people know about the existence of healers, mind readers, oneiromancers and wizards. But for centuries their lives have been kept secret and no one has ever heard about one special place, where those gifted people studied.

Neither has Eileen Clark, whose life has never been different from the one other teenagers have.

But one day everything changes. Eileen finds out that she belongs to the mysterious world of unnatural and the destiny leads her to Dever – a closed university for the people like her.

Nothing will ever be the same again…

New life, new friends, new enemies…

But the true love will never let her down. It will help to go through everything…

#1 Love lines

The story begins with a strange dream, which has been torturing Eileen for nights. Trying to find out its hidden meaning she leans on her best friend Amanda for help. The two of them go to a fortune-teller, who predicts changes in Eileen’s life.

Eileen and Amanda, whose family is one of the seven founders of Dever, go there to start new life and get education. Coming to the university Eileen meets Christian, Amanda’s brother, whom she falls in love with from the very first sight.  But, as it turns out later, Christian is in love with her too.

They couldn’t even imagine that many years ago their lives were bound by magical spells. But now they have to find out why…

~~~~~
#2 Songs of the wind
Losing Christian hasn’t been easy for Eileen. But she’s not going to give up. Now she has to find a way to bring him back from the magical dream, where he was taken by Eric Lanster. Together with her friend Evan, Eileen goes to France – Meridin’s motherland, where she hopes to find out the mysteries of the dream’s magic. In a small town named Fontainebleau they meet a wizard,
who turns out to know a lot of their secrets…
Determined to help Eileen, Evan agrees to complete some special dream piercing training. But he can’t even imagine what he has put himself into. The magic of dreams keeps a lot of secrets. The spells are dangerous and their consequences no one is able to predict.
Friends can become enemies…
The ones they used to call their family can become traitors…
But the ones they love will always be there to help…
#2,5 From scratch
(Evan Murray’s story)
Our lives are a cascade of events that pass faster than we would like them to. Time changes everything. Our habits, our views, our circle of friends. But there is one thing that remains the same over the years.
Our memories.
Through them we cherish the most unforgettable moments of our history. And they also retain some things that can’t be forgotten….
But one day you realize that yesterday should be left in the past. Because tomorrow your new life begins, and you go back to the drawing board.
A love story of Evan Murray and Tara Mackenzie.
A story that should last forever….
But no one knows when forever ends….
A few words about Diamond Sky (Love Lines # 3)
The description: A new page of the Love Lines story that will reveal new secrets and mysteries buried in the walls of Dever. Eileen, Christian and Evan need to find an old spell to protect themselves and those they love from being killed. There is only one problem – no one knows where the spell is hidden….
A mysterious student comes to Dever. A boy whose eyes are always watching. Who is he? What secrets are hidden behind his smiles? Is he a friend or an enemy?…
When they thought they knew everything about the super powers they possessed, they could have never imagined that in reality they didn’t know a thing. The wind can turn into the worst hurricane they have ever seen. The water can destroy everything. The earth can swallow them alive. And the fire can burn them to ashes….
The illusions – the only thing they tried to run away from, will come back to ruin the world they live in, taking away everything they ever cherished and loved.
When you think you are so close to getting what you want, think twice about your every step. Because what you think is the right thing to do may take away your life….
From the author:
The next book of the Love lines series will bring a lot of surprises. You will meet new characters and find out about new super powers they possess. As you already know this time our heroes need to find an old spell hidden somewhere in Dever that the members of the Dragons brotherhood are willing to get to become almighty and immortal. Finding the spell can save Eileen and all the people she’s bound with, and that’s why it’s so important to get to it sooner than anyone else.
Love and relationship between the characters will be developing not exactly the way most of you thought they would:) I promise to give Evan a chance to have a real date. With whom? Try to guess:)
In general the events of the book will reveal new secrets and the ending will be unexpected and dramatic. Well, as always I want to make something you will be looking forward to read more about:)
