In that singular moment, unassuming Birdie becomes the girl in everyone’s viewfinder. Thugs want to kill her. Money-guy wants to recruit her. The very hot, very rich and very out of her league Grey Mathews wants to save her. Birdie, though, wants nothing to do with any of them until she realizes fate didn’t bring them all together. Her heritage did. Now, with only twenty-one days left, she’s got to decide whether to follow in the footsteps of those before her or risk her life for people she’s only just met.

~~~~~
I happen to have read Crux (my review). I also happened to love it. Full of Vikings and legend, and battle and love, this YA has a little of everything. HUGE thanks to Julie Reece for her prize donation.
Prize number 2
1 E-Book of AFTER DARK by Emi Gayle (International).
What eighteen year old Mac Thorne doesn’t know will probably kill her. In exactly eight months, five days, three hours and thirteen minutes, Mac has to choose what she’ll be for the rest of her life. She has no choice but to pick. As a Changeling, it’s her birthright. To Mac, it’s a birthchore. Like going to school with humans, interacting with humans, and pretending to be human during the pesky daylight hours. Once darkness descends, Mac can change into any supernatural form that exists-which makes her as happy as she can be. That is, until Winn Thomas, the biggest geek in her senior class, figures out there’s more to what hides in the dark than most are willing to acknowledge. In this first of the 19th Year Trilogy, Winn might know more about Mac than even she does, and that knowledge could end their lives, unless Mac ensures the powers-that-be have no choice but to keep him around.
~~~~~

Another YA title I’ve read and loved (my review). Paranormal with a difference, attitude with an edge, and an unlikely romance that might just make you fall for a geek. HUGE thanks to Emi Gayle for her prize donation.

IMG_20130202_183139Can you give one guy your heart and another your soul?

The last thing eighteen-year-old Breena Cross needs in her life is more complications. It’s all she can do to balance studying, working, trying to keep her foster-sister safe and drooling over the new guy at work. But things go from complicated to crazy when a fit of rage ignites the dark magic inside her and she finds herself fending off the supernatural underworld.

Myles, Breena’s drool-worthy coworker and vampire convict, is carrying a load of secrets–one of which is that he’s fang-over-lip in love with Breena and in danger of violating the terms of his sentence.

Orin is a soul-hungry assassin sent to kill Breena. However, he takes one look into her eyes and sees his own lost humanity. For once thinking of someone other than himself, he chooses not to end her life, even though it means risking his own.

Despite a convict and an assassin fighting over her, all Breena wants is custody of her sister. But to do this, she will need help from both Myles and Orin. And if Breena doesn’t learn to control the darkness within, she could lose her sister…forever.

Prize number 12

1 signed paperback of THE P.U.R.E. by Claire Gillian (US only).

THEPURECGILLIANNo one ever said Gayle Lindley’s first job would be a killer.

Fresh out of college, Gayle’s career path should follow the yellow brick road straight to the top. Thanks to a menial errand gone wrong, a wayward tongue, and a randy supervisor who won’t take ‘no’ for an answer, Gayle’s stuck in corporate hell.

Discovering a company secret only turns up the heat.

The one part of her life not going down in flames is her friendship with the gorgeous but intensely private, Jon Cripps. Jon would make the perfect consolation prize for Gayle’s pity party if dating a co-worker wasn’t career suicide. Then again, with all Gayle has been through, maybe falling in love is the lucky break she needs.

Hitting the cool sheets with Jon soothes her mind and body, but it also enrages whoever’s behind the smokescreen she’s uncovered at work. Someone is willing to kill to protect their secrets, and Gayle and Jon are the targets.

With both her heart and livelihood at stake, Gayle’s early career-limiting moves could turn into life-terminating ones.

Another one I happen to have read and was very entertained by (my review). Fun antics, a hot guy that’ll win you over in no time, an absolute nutter of an MC, and a mystery to unravel. Who’d have known accounting could be so exciting? HUGE thanks to Claire Gillian for her prize donation.

Prize number 14

1 E-Book of HIDE & SEEK by Aimee Laine (International).

Lie, cheat or steal, no one can catch Tripp Fox. Except one woman.

Lexi Shepherd’s knack for finding whatever is asked of her isn’t sheer luck. It’s a gift from the Greek god Zeus.

That Lexi doesn’t use her ability to search for “Mr. Right” comes from one of many personal rules she has set for herself. Number one is not to let fate dictate her future.

Falling in love with Tripp breaks all the others.

Despite her principles, Lexi’s unable to stay away from the bad boy, and she finds herself toeing the grey line of the law for him.

Zeus, though, didn’t give Lexi and Tripp their talents to make their relationship a simple, easy alliance. He designed it to be exactly the opposite. Impossible. Always.

With their separation, Lexi expects Tripp to forfeit love in favor of destiny. He, on the other hand, intends to beat Zeus at his own game. With a plan in place, Tripp challenges Lexi to take the one action no one else can.

Find him.

The question isn’t can she … but will she?

~~~~~
Tripp Fox. I really don’t think there’s anything more to say (my H&S review). I’m a big fan of Aimee Laine. Love all her male leads. And, man, does she know how to write romance. Not forgetting the twists of paranormal or mythology she often tosses into the mix. HUGE thanks to Aimee Laine for her prize donation.
Prize number 16
1 signed paperback of REAPER by L.S. Murphy (US only).
20130228_065716
There’s no way sixteen year old Quincy Amarante will become the fifth grim reaper. None. Not over her shiny blue Mustang. Her Jimmy Choos. Or her dead body.
She’s supposed to enjoy her sophomore year, not learn about some freaky future Destiny says she has no choice but to fulfill.
It doesn’t take long for Quincy to realize the only way out of the game is to play along especially since Death can find her anyway, anywhere, anytime. And does.
20130228_065734Like when she’s reassuring her friends she wants nothing to do with former best friend Ben Moorland, who’s returned from god-knows-where, and fails. Miserably.
Instead of maintaining her coveted popularity status, Quincy’s goes down like the Titanic.
Maybe … just maybe … that’s okay.
It seems, perhaps, becoming a grim reaper isn’t just about the dead but more about a much needed shift in Quincy’s priorities—from who she thinks she wants to be to who she really is.
~~~~~

This one’s almost still hot off the press as it only released in January. And yes, I’ve read it. Yes, I was thoroughly entertained (my review). And yes, you will enjoy it if you just so happen to win. :) HUGE thanks to L.S. Murphy for her second prize donation.

Afraid her dart caused his amnesia, Milo takes him in, names him Nick, and vows to help him solve his mystery. Soon the pair find Nick’s face in a newspaper obituary, and Nick beings to have strange, ethereal memories of Milo–who is sure she’s never met him. Suddenly Nick knows things he shouldn’t know and is doing things he shouldn’t do. When the Department of Defense shows up, Nick and Milo run–toward a shocking conclusion that could destroy both their worlds.

I spotted this one a couple months back when the cover revealed for it and couldn’t help but the love the simplicity of it. Plus, the guy on the front is cute. I’m looking forward to checking this one out. HUGE thanks to Ella James for her second donation.

7)      Once winners have been contacted and responses have been received, their details will then be passed on to the contributors for delivery of the prize. Please note: once this has been done, I am not responsible for delivery of your prize. I will, however, contact the contributor on your behalf if your prize has not arrived within one month and you make me aware of this.

Alrighty then.

Good luck!

Bookaroo-Ju’s Top Picks of 2012!

Well, 2012 is coming to a rapid closure, and it’s hard to believe I’ve been book blogging for over 10 months already. What else I find amazing is how my reading material has altered over this past year. Like a switch has been flipped, I’ve gone from reading primarily adult titles to as much YA/NA as I can get my hands on. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older now, and I’m trying to relive my youth. *snort*

Anyhoo, I figured, what better way to wrap up my first year in book blogging than by shouting out about my top ten titles read in 2012.

Sounds simple, right?

Um … well, according to Goodreads, I got through 120 books in 2012.

Now does it sound simple?

But fear not. I managed it somehow. Here goes.

toppicks12

In in the order I read them, coz it was toooo hard to organise all ten into a tidy line, here are my top picks.

Iiiiiiiiiiin 10:

She should have run. Now, she’ll have to fight. Eighteen year old Birdie may be homeless, but she’s surviving, that is until a mysterious guy throws money in the air like a crazy game show host and she grabs some with the idea she’ll be able to buy dinner that night. Her heritage did. Now, with only twenty-one days left, she’s got to decide whether to follow in the footsteps of those before her or risk her life for people she’s only just met.

Debut author Julie Reece has created a great UF/PNR for YA readers, filled with Norse mythology, action, and romance to boot. RECOMMEND!

My Review.

~~~~~
Iiiiiiiiiiiiin 9:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series–dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.
LOVED! Fell in Love with Beatrice. Fell in love with Tris. RECOMMEND!
Fresh world building. Fresh outlook on supernaturals. And a feisty female to lead the way. RECOMMEND!
Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin 7:
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with “freaky” scars on her arms. Even Echo can’t remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal.But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo’s world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.
Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she’ll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.
I do believe Noah may just be my favourite book boyfriend To Date! LOVED him! And Echo was just a GREAT character to travel alongside and get to know. RECOMMEND!
My Review.
Innnnnnnnnnn 6:
“History is on repeat, and things didn’t go so well the last time. “
Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday–to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner… and so is Aiden.
If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time “training”–which really is just Seth’s code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time–she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.
But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed.
Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate…
HUGE fan of the Covenant series. And as much as I love Seth, and he won me over in Pure, Deity was, without doubt, the book of the series so far. RECOMMEND!
My Review.
~~~~~

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin 5:

Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.

Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?

Now … I’m not naturally a fantasy fan, so any time a fantasy title grabs me by the curlies and keeps me reading along at breakneck speed and panting to know how it’s all gonna play out … trust me, I’m impressed. I fell in love with these characters. And I am eagerly awaiting book 2. RECOMMEND!

My Review.

~~~~~
Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiin 4:
INTENSE. DANGEROUS. ADDICTIVE.
Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.
Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby wants—and needs—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.
Travis Maddox just might the. most. screwed up. character I’ve ever read. And I fell in love with him. You MUST read Beautiful Disaster, if only for him. RECOMMEND!
My Review.
~~~~~

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin 3:

Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally. Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can’t. Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he’s not doing it. And no one seems to believe him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Because Layne has a few secrets of her own…

Man, do I Loooooooove the Merrick Brothers. To be honest, I had a hard time choosing between this one and Storm, coz Gabriel and Chris as both just so awesome. But Gabriel’s moodiness and anguish he managed to make me experience for him won the toss. It’s awesome. If you haven’t read this series, why the hell not? RECOMMEND!

My Review.

“I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”

So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors ofNick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?

Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own.

Ah, yes, Dash & Lily. EASILY the cutest, most endearing, and most heart-warming book of the year. READ IT, PEOPLE! RECOMMEND!

Annnnnnnnnnnd in the NUMBER 1 HOTSPOT IN MY LIST OF TOP PICKS OF 2012 ISSSSSSSSSSSSSS:

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Dude! This book just completely rocked my world. What more is there to say? Other than DAEMON BLACK!!!!! anyway? ;) HIGHLY RECOMMEND IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YET YOU’RE OFF YOUR ROCKER GET ON ITTTTTTTTTT!

Special Release Day Review: Crux by Julie Reece

Title: Crux

Author: Julie Reece

Publisher: J. Taylor Publishing

Publication date: July 9th 2012

Source: ARC received from the publisher.

From Goodreads:

She should have run. Now, she’ll have to fight.

Eighteen year old Birdie may be homeless, but she’s surviving, that is until a mysterious guy throws money in the air like a crazy game show host, and she grabs some with the idea she’ll be able to buy dinner that night.

In that singular moment, unassuming Birdie becomes the girl in everyone’s viewfinder. Thugs want to kill her. Money-guy wants to recruit her. The very hot, very rich, and very out of her league Grey Mathews wants to save her.

Birdie, though, wants nothing to do with any of them, until she realizes fate didn’t bring them all together.

Her heritage did.

Now, with only twenty-one days left, she’s got to decide whether to follow in the footsteps of those before her or risk her life for people she’s only just met.

My Review

Take one likeable, relatable girl with a crappy background, one swoon-worthy dude who has just the right amount of strength and just the right amount of give-a-damn, one quirky-if-eccentric mentor, and one shedload of heritage revelations that leads the cool girl and cute guy to an unavoidable pinnacle moment in a certain history—with girl battling every one of her demons and fears along the way—and you pretty much have Crux.

I think that’s everything. There are so many aspects to this tale and they’re all so effortlessly linked to make the bigger picture that at first glance one might miss just how complex this tale is. Because there’s a little of everything in here. As kinda mentioned above.

Now, I hate spoilers in reviews and will avoid sticking any in if at all possible, so here goes:

Birdie: Love her headstrong yet vulnerable character, and the development we witness as she goes from being used to taking care of herself to being protective of others she’s allowed herself to care about.

Grey: *Sigh* He is an absolute darling. He can come fight my battles any day of the week. ;o)

Jeff: He may not appear at first glance to be a cool guy but dig deeper and you’ll notice that very little ruffles his feathers. Oh, and there is definitely more to Jeff than meets the eye.

On top of these three major players, we have a pretty diverse supporting cast—the cool friends, the total b***h that gives Birdie grief, the love of a family that Grey takes for granted and Birdie craves …

The plot: It’s historical, it’s Nordic, it’s romantic, it’s fantastical, it’s … epic? That’s about as much as I’m willing to say on that. Except for: the author’s writing has an almost lyrical tone to it, a flow to her prose that can lure you along without you even realising you’ve been captured. A definite win!

The Sweetest Song by Claire Gillian
Under Poseidon’s rule, Circe is the most destructive siren in the Pacific ocean, her songs luring ships and their crew to their watery graves. Not Otis, the best halibut fisherman in the Alaskan waters. His ship, the Calypso, has avoided disaster each time Circe set her sights on him.

Given one last chance to deliver Otis to Davy Jones’ locker, Circe takes to land to waylay the handsome captain. Instead, it may be Otis himself who hooks the Siren.
Pearl of Pau’maa by Kelly Said

With one last opportunity before she must concede, she sneaks off for a final dive to her hidden crate at the bottom of the seabed. What waits for her is more than a captured lobster. It’s a treasure she cannot claim without great sacrifice or true love.

The Undergarden by Jocelyn Adams
Nixie, a water sprite, lives a solitary existence as she struggles to understand the strange world beyond her waters. When she meets one of the pink ones, a curious boy named Wyatt, their friendship blooms into a love that can exist only upon the sands that divide his solid ground from her underwater paradise. Some love, though, once born, cannot be undone, even in the face of death.

My Review

As each of the four stories are so very different, I decided to review each short individually.

Heart’s Desire by Julie Reece

This is such a lovely story. There is sadness and heartache, and hope, and yearning, and desire, and love, and the added fantastical element written in a way that gives this an almost fairy tale/dreamlike persona. Very enjoyable. My only complaint would be that the development between Cam and Tessa and the time they spent together could so have turned this into a longer story because I’m sure I’d have loved being on that part of their journey with them. :o )

The Sweetest Song by Claire Gillian

I struggled a little with the opening of this one. I’m not sure why. I don’t know if it’s because it dove right into the issue the female had to deal with and I was suddenly thrust into a situation where I had to keep up and understand before I’d barely been introduced to the character I was expected to care about. BUT … I read on, and got to the part where Circe met Otis and I was a gonner. I loved Otis. He’s just adorable. The dude alone could have fronted an entire novel and had female readers swooning over him. I really enjoyed watching the development between them because Circe was really such a sweet little thing, also. The only thing that bugged me was the ending a little bit. Not ‘how’ it ended, but the comedy that was suddenly thrust upon us between Poseidon and Aphrodite and how easily this (what I’ve always envisioned to be) fearful god kowtowed to the other god’s demand. The strength of the humour seemed a little out of place in context with the rest of the story and so almost seemed forced, and the compliance from he who should have opposed their ‘love’ a little too neat. But I still enjoyed it a lot. :)

Pearl if Pau’maa by Kelly Said

This one was a gorgeous surprise. The descriptions took me along nicely for the ride. The characters–both Harmon and Miki–were adorable. Creeb made me giggle a lot, despite his short appearance. And I couldn’t help but be slightly awed by the author’s imagination with this one.
Oh, yes: and I had a goofy smile most of the way through. :)

The Undergarden by Jocelyn Adams

Okay, first word: WAHN! Man, I feel like blarting after finishing this one. Talk about emotional. Another tale told in an almost surreal and dreamlike fashion, with a couple of adorable characters leading the way. I’m not sure there’s much more to say other than it’s totally adorable and don’t read without tissues at the ready.

My rating: 4 stars

Book Trailer: Crux by Julie Reece

I’m VERY excited about the upcoming release of Crux by Julie Reece. So I’m also VERY excited to share the book trailer with you all.

Before I do, here’s a little about the book:

Her heritage did.

Isn’t that cover awesome? Absolutely love it!
