Review: Storm by Brigid Kemmerer

Title: Storm

Series: Elementals #1

Author: Brigid Kemmerer

Publisher: K Teen (Kensington)

Publication date: April 24th 2012

Source: I own a copy thanks to the awesome & amazing Natalie Cleary (I owe you).

From Goodreads:

Earth, Fire, Air, Water – they have more power than you dream.

Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread those lies about her, Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys—all the ones she doesn’t want. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water—just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They’re powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.

And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.

Secrets are hard to keep when your life’s at stake. When Hunter, the mysterious new kid around school, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who’s hiding the most dangerous truth of all.

The storm is coming . . .

My Review

After reading Brigid Kemmerer’s Elemental and being left hanging with an absolute tonne of questions, I was really excited when I managed to acquire a copy of Storm.

In fact, I was so excited, I shunned all of my review reads and dove right into it the first chance I had.

So … did it live up to my expectations?

Ooooooooh, you betcha.

I started the book late Saturday night in bed and read the first 43 pages. Then the moment I woke Sunday morning, I dove right back in, and pretty much didn’t put the book down for the entire day until I announced to my (extremely patient) hubby that I’d finished.

So, why did it hold my attention so rapt?

Well, I imagine it had something to do with 5 cute guys, every single one of them with a unique personality.

The heroine, even, could have had a lot to do with it—because Becca is all kinds of kick-a$$ in her own right, with so much inner strength combined with vulnerabilities that only a rock would struggle to connect with her.

Or it could have had something to do with the easy flow to this author’s writing style that ensured getting swept along in her created world is an absolute breeze.

Then again, it could have been the fact that there was not a single lull in the storyline. Not one. Because even the parts that weren’t full of elemental-style action had just the right amount of pacing, with just the right kind of tone, with all the believable dialogue in the world (I tell you, there is a lot to be learned about pacing from reading this book. I don’t think I’ve ever before seen such consistency).

Or maybe, it’s a combination of all of the above.

Though, I must admit, that Chris did kind of steal the show for me.

Yes, Hunter was sweet and all, but he didn’t have that grouchy edge that I (rather twistedly) find so appealing in my male leads. And yeah, Gabriel is so obvious the bad boy with all of his instigations in any not quite legal deeds. And sure, Michael is so strong, and Nick is about as level-headed and cute as they come.

But none of them are Chris.

Because I fell pretty hard and fast for Chris. On which I only have one thing to say: Ms Kemmerer O_O how could you make me wait so long?

So, if you’re looking for a YA with believable characters, and an exciting plot, and action and hot guys galore, as well as a train-collision-type ohmygodhowdidinotseethatcoming twist right near the ending … then, yeah, Storm is definitely for you.

Check it out! Can’t WAIT for Fearless & Spark!

Have you read this title? What’d you think?

Showcase Sunday #7

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme hosted by Vicky @ Books, Biscuits & Tea. The aim of this event is to showcase our newest books or book related swag and to see what everyone else received for review, borrowed from libraries, bought in bookshops and downloaded onto eReaders this week. For more information about how this feature works and how to join in, click here.

I’ve had a great week this week. Whilst I didn’t exactly go mad in the buying department, or in the review-request department, what I did get is pretty awesome.

Here there are:

BOUGHT:

This one was FREE! So, of course, I nabbed a copy coz the blurb sounds fun (even if the cover isn’t quite my cup of tea)

And remember that £10 Amazon voucher I was gifted with? Well, I did initially want to get the 1st Immortal Instruments (coz I haven’t read any of them), but turned out Amazon didn’t do the nice new pretty cover, only the slightly fugly old one. :( And I didn’t want that on my shelf–so I’ve decided to wait until the new cover’s available.

Instead, I added £1.61 of my own pence to the gift voucher and nabbed:

The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton. DUDE, this cover is enough to make a girl salivate. It’s very shiny, too. I’ve stroked it. A LOT! ;)

Partials by Dan Wells. This one has come highly recommended and I got it dirt cheap for £3-something. Another shiny, pretty cover. The book’s way thicker than I expected, though. :)

WON/GIFTED:

I’ve gotta say, the kindness amongst the book blogging community never ever fails to wow me. Since I’ve been blogging here (and on Goodreads prior to starting the blog), I’ve had books posted to me for loan, books I’ve really wanted purchased for me as gifts, and now I’ve had an extraneous copy of a book I really needed (coz we always need the book, it’s never a simple want, right?) to get and wouldn’t have been able to for a little while.

So, to Natalie Cleary, a HUGE thanks for sending me:

Storm by Brigid Kemmerer (another perdy cover)
:)

And, OF COURSE, I mustn’t forget one of the highlights of my week. Another act of total generosity. The pure awesome Rebecca Hart (author of Call of the Sea as well as reviewer over at Bex Book Nook) booked herself a day at BEA. AND, because she knew how much I luuurve Jennifer L. Armentrout, she took her own copy of Obsidian along and got Jen to sign it to ME!

Lookie:

All I had to do was replace Becca’s copy. MAJOR win! Huge thanks to Ms Hart!

Lastly, for blogging to help promote their new Dead Sexy imprint, Entangled gifted me with a copy of:

I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about Diane Alberts, so I’m looking forward to delving into this one and checking her writing out.

Cheers for this, Misa.

And finally onto …

FOR REVIEW:

From Entangled via NetGalley (thankee), so I’m looking forward to it. :)

:)

And that’s it. I think.

What’s in your Showcase Sunday this week?

Oh, and I changed the colours & header of the blog. Whatcha think?

:)
